1. Never read research in isolation. Before the conclusions can be considered viable, other independent research needs to confirm the original results.
2. A control group, is a group of individuals within the sample group that they are researching, and researchers use the control group as a baseline. They use this group to compare to the group that they gave the experimental treatment to - to see what effect the treatment had.
3. A placebo group, is a group of individuals within the sample group that receive a similar in appearance treatment to that of the treatment group. For example: Research testing the effects of a drug will give the placebo group a pill that is the same color, size, shape and taste as that of the drug that they are testing. They do this to eliminate any unconscious bias of the individuals that they are testing.
4. Double blind conditions refer to conditions that researchers use during their research. When they use double blind conditions, this means that neither the subjects being used in the research or the administrators or testers conducting the research know which is the treatment, or which is the placebo treatment. This allows the researchers to eliminate any unconcsious bias of the individuals that they are testing or the individuals that are administering the testing. These conditions are pretty much standard amongst reputable research.
